The populist Geert Wilders is expert at using trials for political benefit.
Today the anti-Muslim firebrand, being prosecuted(起诉) for racial insult（种族羞辱） and incitement（煽动） to hatred（仇恨） over a 2014 speech in which he called for “fewer Moroccans” in the Netherlands, will hear the court’s verdict（裁决）.
Mr Wilders claims he referred only to the criminal element in the Moroccan-Dutch community, and that the government has singled him out for political reasons. (He also argues that Moroccans are not protected by the hate-speech law, as they are not a “race”.)
He has been here before: in 2011 he was acquitted on similar charges after terming Islam a fascist ideology and calling for banning the Koran.
A national election is due on March 15th, and Mr Wilders’s Party for Freedom leads polls, with more than 20% of the vote. A guilty verdict might feed his fans’ persecution complex, and drive the number even higher.
